Exports of Panamanian products remain in times of pandemic

The agricultural sector has been strengthened, increased production of food for national consumption, but also exports of Panamanian products to the international market have remained at encouraging levels, according to figures reported by the National Directorate of Plant Health (DNSV) of the Ministry of Health. Agricultural Development (MIDA), through the Phytosanitary Certification department.

The phytosanitary export certification is a service provided by MIDA Plant Health to exporters of fresh fruits and vegetables, which is supported by the actions of the Phytosanitary Surveillance of specific pests developed in the cultivation fields.

The certification has the purpose of contributing to the fulfillment of the phytosanitary requirements of the importing commercial partners and involves the registration process of the exporters and the authorization of the packing plants, which must comply with the operating and biosafety standards required internationally. It also includes the inspection of shipments to verify that the entire post-harvest handling process in the plant is carried out based on established technical procedures.

In the first half of 2021, 12,313 Phytosanitary Export Certificates (CFE) have been issued, corresponding to the same number of exported containers, representing 96% of the total CFE issued throughout 2020, which closed with 12,872.
