MIDES highlights the reopening of 100 Early Childhood Care Centers


The Minister of Social Development, María Inés Castillo, revealed that currently in Panama 100 Comprehensive Early Childhood Care Centers (CAIPI) have been reopened and 632 educational agents have been reactivated, which implies a population of 1,525 children, then that the country take actions to return to normality in the face of the health crisis caused by COVID-19.

The statements of Minister Castillo were given this Wednesday, June 9 in the framework of a virtual colloquium organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and which was focused on the reopening of child care and preschool centers, where in addition to Panama There were exhibitors from Colombia, Chile, Mexico, as well as representatives of the multilateral organization and participants from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The CAIPIs are spaces that offer comprehensive care for early childhood through a portfolio of services, which includes main and complementary care in terms of early learning, health, nutrition and identity.

Panama, since March 2020, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, established mitigation measures, which included the closure of schools and CAIPI. However, in February of this year these child care centers were reopened under the supervision of the competent authorities and under strict biosecurity measures.

The head of MIDES highlighted in her presentation that to undertake this reopening, scenarios and various managerial instruments were designed that facilitated decision-making for the accreditation of CAIPIs that complied with the regulations of the entity and the Ministry of Health (MINSA).
