PANAMA COMMITTED TO EQUAL SALARY

Vice Chancellor Dayra Carrizo Castillero participated in a discussion with global leaders in commemoration of the International Day for Equal Pay, at the invitation of the International Coalition for Equal Pay (EPIC).

In his speech, he reiterated the country's commitment to closing economic gender gaps through initiatives of the National Government, private companies and NGOs.

“Certainly getting a fair salary for both genders for work of equal value is the goal. This Covid-19 pandemic has affected everyone, especially women. Panama has not been an exception. Therefore, education and access to information are important actions. It is necessary to adapt with increasingly creative tools to achieve the objective of sensitizing the population about the importance of equal pay ”, highlighted the Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations.

The high authority cited as an example the publication of the pedagogical document: Salary Gap for Dummies, which seeks to familiarize the population with a basic framework of understanding about the salary gap. Also through the microsite https://mire.gob.pa/epic/, tools are provided and promoted to reduce the income imbalance.

In addition, workshops have been held to promote the use of the Remuneration Diagnosis (DIR) developed by UN Women to support companies and organizations to assess whether they are applying the principle of "Equal remuneration for work of Equal value".

From other work spaces, the government of Panama promotes actions such as the Gender Equality Seal in public institutions through equality committees for the diagnosis of wage gaps, as well as the promotion of the SiGender Program that is implemented with companies, which execute plans and measures to close salary gaps.

Currently, Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes represents Panama on the Steering Committee of the EPIC initiative. From this space, the National Government seeks to ensure greater participation of women in the world of work under equal conditions under the guidelines of the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) that this administration has committed to honor.
