Panama sends 15 tons of humanitarian aid to the people of Haiti

After collecting the donations made by Panamanians, the National Government sent, this Tuesday, 15 tons of humanitarian aid to the Republic of Haiti for the people affected by the earthquake that shook this Caribbean country.

The cargo, which includes dry food, medicine, water and tents, was transferred from the National Aeronaval Service (Senan) terminal located at the Tocumen International Airport, on a Chilean Air Force flight.

At the event, the Foreign Minister, Erika Mouynes, highlighted the support of the Panamanian people who, despite the severe economic crisis due to the pandemic, have expressed solidarity at this time.

He said that Panama offers its geographical position at the service of the international community, by launching the rapid response protocols of the Regional Center for Humanitarian Assistance, one of the six existing in the world and the only one that operates from the American continent.

Mouynes acknowledged that this crisis "is a problem that affects us all in the region" and added that, with the support of Chile, "we have managed to reach Haiti." He added that, through the platform of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Organization of American States (OAS), he has sent diplomatic notes to all countries interested in sending urgent aid for the victims.

The Chancellor stressed that she is coordinating with the countries to send all the help that is required, such as food and water, in addition to that which is needed in the hospitals that care for those affected by the earthquake.

"I think they will need more support and that is why we are in coordination with all the countries in the region," said the Foreign Minister, while emphasizing that the response of the Panamanian people "should make us all proud."

For his part, the Chilean ambassador to Panama, Germán Becker, said that now that the Humanitarian Hub in Panama is operating, “we are very happy to do this joint work with Panama; the Panamanian people showed that they are very supportive and have allowed all this help that is very necessary to face a catastrophe like this one ”.

"We are very satisfied and we are sure working together with Panama, because they are very supportive people, and Chile will always be available to support these efforts," said the ambassador.

The Regional Center for Humanitarian Assistance is a logistics platform that will be receiving, managing, storing and redistributing all international aid destined for Haiti.
