They present a national strategy for the prevention and care of pregnancy in girls and adolescents

The National Council of the Adolescent Mother (Conama) met today Monday to present two transcendental documents. This is the new national and intersectoral strategy for the prevention and care of pregnancy and the sexual education guides, which will lay the foundations for the new public policy aimed at addressing everything related to prevention and care measures for premature pregnancies.

The session was chaired by the First Lady of the Republic, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo, and the Minister of Social Development (Mides), María Inés Castillo, who highlighted that both instruments are a starting point to address everything related to an issue of multifactorial public health that generates a lot of concern in Panamanian society.

The strategy, which was advised by the European Union for Social Cohesion in Latin America EUROsociAL +, is structured in three components. The first responds to the prevention of pregnancies in adolescents from 10 to 19 years old.

The second focuses on the comprehensive care of adolescents during pregnancy and the prevention of repeated pregnancies, while the third component speaks of the support that must be provided to adolescent mothers and fathers.

Colón de Cortizo recalled that early motherhood brings with it consequences that affect the physical and mental health as well as the integral development of girls and adolescents, for which he classified the session as "strategic" due to the positive impact it will have on Panamanian families.

"Unplanned pregnancies is an urgent issue that we are dealing with with great responsibility, understanding that our young people are at the center of the discussion," said the First Lady.

Meanwhile, Minister Castillo explained that each component presents a line of work that will allow addressing early pregnancy in an articulated way with the support and offer of the 13 institutions that make up Conama.

For the head of the social portfolio, the national pregnancy prevention and care strategy is a document that includes fundamental aspects such as early childhood care, job promotion and the reintegration of young people into the educational system; important aspects that affect the social development of new parents.
