First Lady makes massive delivery of donations in islands of the District of Montijo

The Office of the First Lady, through the Directorate of Social Assistance, made a tour of three islands in the district of Montijo in the province of Veraguas, where, together with various State institutions, it made massive donations.

The First Lady of the Republic, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo, led this tour in the Leones, Gobernadora and Cébaco islands of the Montijo district, where scholarships were awarded to students, seed capital to entrepreneurs by AMPYME, agricultural tools, tool boxes , kits for artisanal fishing, food bags, footwear, among other aids.

"Being here for the first time is truly exciting. I want to congratulate these communities because, despite the limitations, they have managed to get ahead through ecotourism and activities such as artisanal fishing, agriculture and handicrafts," said Colón de Cortizo.

The first stop of the social assistance tour was in Isla Leones, which has about 224 inhabitants according to the 2010 Census. Leones has three communities and does not have electricity, so the residents have their own lighting system. Some use solar panels and other electrical generators, however, due to lack of resources, part of the residents do not have electricity.

Meanwhile, Isla Gobernadora was the second point benefited with the delivery of donations. According to the 2010 census, it has 269 inhabitants and they also have no electricity supply. Unlike the other two islands, Gobernadora has a health post with an assistant and medicines.

The last point on this tour was Isla Cébaco, home to more than 370 inhabitants. This portion of land also has three communities and like the previous ones, it does not have electricity. Its main activities are fishing; although in recent years sport fishing, promoted by tourists, has been practiced in this area, as well as ecotourism.

Declared a Ramsar site, Montijo seeks to break through in ecotourism. It is an emerging destination with pristine and unexplored sun and beach settings. The islands of Leones, Gobernadora and Cébaco have unique natural settings for adventure and nature lovers.

Montijo is located to the west of the Azuero peninsula, it is a small gulf open to the south, protected by the Cébaco island and other smaller ones such as Gobernadora and Leones.
