PROJECTS FOR THE INTEGRAL AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF PORTOBELO AND SAN LORENZO, PROVINCE OF COLÓN, ADVANCE AND GENERATE JOBS


With the impulse of the Tourism Cabinet, attached to the Ministry of the Presidency, the works related to the conservation of the Cultural and Natural Heritage and the Community Development Plan of the district of Portobelo, which is financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), advance.

In this sense, there is the project for the restoration of the Portobelo Customs Office, which includes the museography, which has an advance of 6% of the work and 3.8 million investment. This project, which will generate 150 direct jobs in the community during its execution, is expected to be inaugurated in two years.

Additionally, the recovery of the San Lorenzo Fort is being advanced, where 4.9 million dollars will be invested in the creation of a museum that in its construction process will generate about 150 jobs and records 21% progress. In this same area, progress is being made in the Rehabilitation of 16.3 kms on the way to Fort San Lorenzo.

On the other hand, projects such as the Water Treatment Plant are being worked on for the district of Portobelo, under the cooperation agreement between the Ministry of the Environment (MiAmbiente) and the National Aqueduct and Sewer Institute (IDAAN). This initiative is in progress with the rehabilitation of the abduction line carried out by the contractor company.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (Miviot) has presented land alternatives that will be evaluated by an inter-institutional commission made up of Miviot, MiAmbiente and ANATI. This commission will be responsible for coordinating with the local authorities and affected families the presentation of a resettlement proposal.

All these projects have the purpose of seeking sustainable social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being, and inclusive of the various social groups of the historic site of Portobelo and San Lorenzo.

The Inter-institutional Commission that promotes these works is made up of MIVIOT, Mi Ambiente (MIAMBIENTE), Obras Públicas (MOP), de Cultura (MICULTURA), the National Authority for Land Administration (ANATI), the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), Municipality of Portobelo and the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).

Its mission is to develop comprehensive actions to strengthen the tourism sector, such as the conservation of the Historic Monumental Complex of Portobelo and San Lorenzo, as well as the development of tourism experiences that become enterprises that improve the quality of life of the local population.
