The importance of monitoring rice cultivation, as a determining factor to lower its production costs, was the main point of a learning day at the Field School (ECA), which took place at the El Guarapo farm in the community. of El Anón, in the district of Santiago, province of Veraguas.

This initiative is part of a program carried out by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA), in conjunction with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), which managed to obtain financial support from the European Union through the EUROCLIMA + Program and others organisms, in order to increase productivity, reducing production costs and also greenhouse gases in the cultivation of this grain.

The head of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, Augusto Valderrama, attended this training session, along with his work team. Valderrama highlighted the benefits of this project and urged producers to support this activity, which lowers costs and helps the environment.

He added that rice producers are believing in education, transformation and training and giving a real sign that they are willing to give their sacrifice quota so that the rice sector continues to advance, modernize and be more competitive to generate more employment. and wealth in this country.

Blanca Gómez, Technical Secretary of the Agricultural Cabinet stated that this project shows that the rice sector has a future and that today, thanks to a policy designed by President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen and directed by Minister Valderrama, they are emerging to reach 90 thousand hectares planted with rice. , of the 72 thousand hectares that were found when they came to the government.

He pointed out that in the midst of the pandemic, producers have made an enormous effort, which shows the confidence they have to continue producing in the country. "We are taking extremely important steps to achieve not only the sustainability of this item but also its permanence over time and guarantee self-sufficiency."
