OAS SECRETARIAT FOR RIGHTS AND EQUITY IS INTERESTED IN THE EVOLUTION OF IRREGULAR MIGRATION IN PANAMA

In order to share updated information on the situation of irregular emigration across our borders, the Chancellor in charge, Dayra Carrizo Castillero, met with representatives of the Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity (SARE) of the Department of Social Inclusion ( DIS) of the Organization of American States (OAS), which is currently directed by the Panamanian Maricamen Plata.

The virtual meeting, in which the Ambassador of Panama to the permanent OAS mission María Roquebert also participated, established the need to identify international cooperation actions with a shared responsibility approach in the face of a cross-border phenomenon with multiple and complex social and humanitarian components.

In her speech, the Vice Chancellor acknowledged that, although the problem of irregular migration is not a new issue, "today the region is experiencing an unprecedented phenomenon, with an unprecedented increase in the number of irregular migrants in transit across our borders."

Panama, underlined the current minister in charge of Foreign Relations, proposes a comprehensive action in the face of this migratory crisis, with joint responsibility among the countries of origin, transit and final destination. “This administration makes a huge effort even though it is not the origin of migration and it is the only country that provides shelter, medical care and food to migrants, as well as biometric identification, among other security controls for the benefit of all. the countries involved in the route, ”he said.

"We cannot alone, so we appeal to the countries of the region to address this phenomenon from a humanitarian perspective, emphasizing the need to establish shared responsibility," insisted the Foreign Minister in charge of the SARE representatives to the OAS.

This meeting represents the continuation of the ambitious work agenda that the Panamanian Foreign Ministry has drawn up to make visible the growing number of irregular migrants who travel the continent from south to north since the border containment measures imposed by the pandemic were relaxed. For Panama, it is important that this information is known precisely to promote definitive and sustainable solutions over time, with the collaboration of multilateral coordinators, such as the OAS.
